Jog on January blues: boost your mood with group exercise.

Happy New Year – or maybe not? For many of us January is a tough month to get through – the festivities have fizzled out, the sun has basically given up and we’re seeing ‘new year, new you’ everywhere. Group exercise could be the perfect mood booster to put some pep back in your step this January and here’s why…

Bye bye January blues

Another Christmas has been and gone, you made yourself impossible resolutions to stick to and you’re just feeling a little blue – sounds like you’ve got a case of the January Blues. You’ll be pleased to know that these mythical blues are in fact totally real but actually known medically as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The NHS describes SAD as: a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern. The cause of it isn’t known but many believe that the lack of sunlight in winter affects our circadian rhythms and production of serotonin and melatonin which affects our overall mood. So, if you’re feeling a little blue this January just know that you are not alone and there are some things that you can do to boost that mood.

  1. Get more sunlight – this can be tricky in the UK but just make sure that whenever the sun is shining you try and get out in it. Even 5 minutes can make a difference!
  1. Manage your stress – in whatever way you do. Whether that’s 10 minutes of meditation in the morning, not checking your phone before sleep or simply seeing friends. Making time for you is vital.
  1. Time to move – For most of us moving permanently to sunnier climes isn’t really possible. But one of the best ways to boost endorphins isn’t exactly a secret. Exercise = endorphins.
